Partners in Healing Wounds

Nightingale Nursing and Rehab Center delivers wound healing results.   Long time nurse, Scott Coccarelli, RN, WCC, shares his appreciation of Nightingale Nursing and Rehab Center’s support in furthering his career.

Mr. Coccarelli started his career at the center fourteen years ago as a Licensed Practical Nurse. While working at the center, he continued his education and in 2014 he became a Registered Nurse. Coccarelli reports that the company leadership was looking for high performing staff with career goals and he knew he wanted to continue growing. Nightingale Nursing and Rehab Center recognized the professional potential in Mr. Coccarelli and supported his ambition to become a Wound Care Certified Registered Nurse.

Nearly a year and a half later, Coccarelli is an integral part of Nightingale Nursing and Rehab Center’s wound care team.   Together with Jenna Soder of Healing Partners and Rece Higby, Director of Nursing, the team works to prevent and heal surgical, pressure, vascular and diabetic wounds. Soder and Coccarelli conduct on-site visits twice a week to ensure that all newly admitted residents receive a full head to toe skin evaluation. For current residents, quarterly skin evaluations offer early detection for early intervention.

People with chronic wounds often have underlining medical conditions that cause a delayed healing response such as stroke, kidney disease, heart disease, immobility, diabetes, autoimmune disease, and low flow issues of the veins and/or arteries. With Coccarelli on staff full-time, he is able to ensure consistent measurements, assessments and treatments are carried out and the wounds are closely monitored. The wound team collaborates with the surgeon, attending physician, primary care physician and wound clinic. Ms. Soder’s advanced practice allows for bedside debridement and advanced modalities to be utilized at the center.   This reduces the need for transfers to the wound clinic. Surgical care follow up is provided to all surgical patients weekly and Soder will coordinate with the surgeon to ensure optimal post op success and healing.

Nursing Home Administrator, Jonali Derry, shares, “The extensive wound care knowledge Scott has gained nicely compliments his compassion for resident daily care. The team has reduced pressure ulcers by 6.1% from March of 2023 to September of 2023.”  Pictured are Registered Nurses, Janel Haupt and Mandy Vanderhoof.
